The New Xbox 360, Codename Durango!

Microsoft will reveal what gamers can look forward to at their official Xbox announcement event on May 21st, while customers and industry players fuel the rumor mill with ecstatic speculation. Expect possible confirmation on everything from an upgraded next-generation operating system based on the core Windows 8 designed to seamlessly integrate with all other Microsoft products and applications, a duel pricing model (ranging from $299 to $499) tied to stand-alone and subscription services, "always-on" internet connection, and a Blu-Ray drive. The new Xbox, codenamed "Durango," will also be offered along with a new version of the current Xbox 360 with a codename of it's own, "Stingray," which will be sold at a cheaper price than the current 360 and may have an updated design itself.

Much of this information comes courtesy of Paul Thurrott, the long-time Windows blogger and insider who has a very good track record of being accurate on these matters, though the possibility of a mistake or partial-correction will continue until the final word from Microsoft tells us what we all want to know, and perhaps even more than we bargained for. This generation's gaming race is truly on, the battle between Sony, who beat Microsoft to the punch in their announcement, and now Microsoft, finally begun in earnest. The saga bound to unfold over the course of this year may determine the future of gaming, and console integration, for the next decade and more. Who, and what, will be the deciding factor, is yet to be seen.

Sony VP Michael Denny On PlayStation 4 and Five Years of Planning Leading Up to Launch

This past February, Sony held an eventful announcement in New York City for the long-awaited Playstation 4, but it was more of a live press release than a grand opening. As Sony Worldwide Studios’ vice president Michael Denny told Edge Online, “I guess the starting point is that it’s been quite a journey to get to that announce [event]. It’s been, for all of us involved at looking at what PlayStation 4 should be, a five-year journey to get to that point. And what the announce in New York was all about was a chance for us to share our vision with everybody of what PlayStation 4 should be. And in essence I hope it came across that that vision is fairly simple, that we are absolutely looking at making a next-gen console for gamers and made by gamers.” Speaking in a mercurial manner, he kept details intriguingly mysterious while reflecting on the now infamously troubled release of the Playstation 3 back in 2006, lessons learned since then, five years of intense development for the PS4, and what Sony will bring to the gaming industry that they believe will trump all other consoles.

Indeed, Denny believes that the new approach of combining brilliant simplicity with state-of-the-art design, support, and special features will not only blow the minds of dedicated gamers, but everyone else as well from casual noobs to their own major rivals Microsoft and Nintendo, leaving even their popular PS3 in the dust. If he's right, not only will audiences and experts finally forgive the beleaguered 2006 PS3 release debacle, they will embrace the PS4 as the undisputed gold standard of next-generation gaming at a time when many are beginning to question whether consoles in general will become obsolete. "I guess ultimately the consumers will answer that question, but from our point of view it’s about offering a new and differentiated experience. Gamers and consumers like new things and I think the console experience is still massively strong out there. Absolutely, gaming has proliferated across a number of devices and we need to embrace that. But none of those other devices are offering the kind of experience you can get on a home console and certainly one that we believe we’re going to offer with PlayStation 4."

So with that in mind, Sony marketing strategy seems to be one of teasing the look and console itself, including even the estimated price, while giving us appetizers of it's new controller and capabilities. It remains to be seen, but so far we definitely savoring the Sony experience.

Robert Downey Jr. comments on Iron Man 3 Anticipation

The Iron Man 3 press conference in London may have come and gone on Wednesday, but as the third installment of the Marvel Cinematic franchise (fourth if counting The Avengers) approaches it‘s May opening, the excitement of both fans and the press continues to skyrocket. Here is a quote from Robert Downey Jr. on how the film's being received:

"All I know is that we're doing something right. I'm really glad that audiences are responding to this movie. Being able to do this again with Don and Gwyneth, it's a great pleasure, but having Sir Ben rocketing us into another dimension with arguably the most complicated arc in superhero history and the over talented Rebecca Hall doing us a big solid by classing up the joint has just made this a most delightful experience. And Drew and Shane listened to us all run our mouths for weeks and weeks and weeks and then they said 'Thank you very much', went away and came back with a script which was the story we shot. That's the reason we're sitting here and that's the reason most of you aren't saying this one sucks."

Boston Comic Con Remains Postponed

Yesterday, Boston Comic Con released a statement on their official website concerning the postponement of this weekend’s scheduled event in the aftermath of the city’s lockdown.

Postponement Annoucement

Due to the unfortunate events that have transpired here in Boston, a lock down has been put into effect until further notice, causing the Hynes Convention Center to suspend all events. As such, The Boston Comic Con will be rescheduled to a date in the not too distant future.

All people who purchased advanced tickets on line will have their tickets honored at the rescheduled show. If for some reason, you can not come to the show on that date, we will refund your ticket.

Please, we ask for your patience, understanding, and cooperation. We appreciate your loyalty, and continued support for the Boston Comic Con. Unfortunately, this situation is beyond our control.

As of yet, it remains indefinitely postponed until further notice although Boston’s lockdown has already been lifted. Other impromptu events were organized by fans and Massachusetts venues, including comic book store Comicazi in what was billed as “Not-The-Boston-Comic-Con,” and featured writers and artists such as Bill Willingham, Nick Bradshaw, AlĂ© Garza, and local indie comic creator Maxwell Pappas who signed copies of his new title, Red Menace and the GWF. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the men allegedly responsible for the city’s lockdown following the devastating bombing of The Boston Marathon has been taken into custody while his brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a dramatic firefight with law enforcement prior to Dzhokhar’s arrest.
